Be Decadent

Aug. 24th 2009

The dog days of summer are here. Hot, hazy steamy days that are meant for lounging in a hammock. To beat the heat this week, I picked up that summertime standard – ice cream. Cold and creamy – nothing beats ice cream. Nothing that is except coconut milk ice cream. Purely Decadent makes a line of organic non-dairy ice cream made from coconut milk, agave nectar, fruit puree and fruit juices. They are dairy free, gluten free, soy free, cholesterol free and trans fat free. Passionate Mango is my current favorite. So go ahead, try some coconut milk ice cream and be a little decadent.

Nature’s sports drink

Aug. 10th 2009

Flipping through the magazine section of the NY Times yesterday, an article on sports drinks and kids caught my eye. What really bothered me about this article was there was no mention of my favorite sports drink – coconut water. Not to be confused with coconut milk, coconut water is the clear liquid extracted from young green coconuts. Naturally fat free, cholesterol free and a superior source of electrolytes, coconut water has higher levels of potassium and magnesium than your average sports drink without the added sugar. The naturally sweet flavor is delicious. So the next time you need a little electrolyte replenishment, skip the day-glo stuff and grab a coconut water. Your body will love you for it!
