Summer’s Bounty

Jun. 30th 2010

Do find fruit boring? Vegetables tasteless? Chances are you’ve been eating produce that was harvested before ripening and shipped hundreds of miles. For a true flavor explosion, eat fruits and vegetables that have been allowed to ripen in the field, harvested with pride and brought to you from your local farmer.

For more on why I love my local farm, check out this short video….

Don’t get mad…GET EVEN

Jun. 8th 2010

Does the overwhelming scope of the devastation to our environment, to the wildlife and to the people of our coastal states make you angry?

Don’t get mad, get even.  Join me in supporting green and sustainable agriculture, energy and socially responsible corporations.

Did you know that fertilizers, shampoos, hand lotion, insect repellent, detergents, food preservatives, house paint and parachutes are among over 6000 products made from petroleum?

I’m not suggesting that you forsake the parachute and pray for wings, but I will challenge you to be conscious of your everyday purchases.   Instead of chemical-laden conventionally raised strawberries from California, why not head out to your local farm and pick them yourself?  Local farmer’s markets are another great option.  Check out localharvest.org to find a farmer’s market or farm near you.

Read labels on beauty and skin care products carefully.  Crude oil comes from beneath the earth so manufacturers can claim petroleum based products are “natural”.   Industry regulation is in its infancy but you can identify petroleum on labels as petrolatum, mineral oil, and paraffin.

Stop complaining about BP and put your money where your mouth is.  Support local farmers and green companies.   It’s better for the planet.  It’s better for you.  And you’ll feel better for making a difference.
