Showing Up

Lately, I’ve been hearing “I’m too busy” from every corner. Too busy to eat right. Too busy to move our bodies. Too busy to do much of anything except check off items on that never-ending to do list and collapse in a heap on the sofa at the end of the day.

Life is busy. No getting around that. The problem arises when we neglect to put ourselves at the top of the priority list. The demands of our career, family life, social obligations all get top billing.

A few years ago, when I was running marathons, a veteran runner told me that it is better to run 20 minutes than not at all. Funny thing, no matter how tired I found myself, once I started running I almost always found that second wind allowing me to run further than the 20 minutes I promised myself.

My yoga teacher is fond of telling the class that it doesn’t matter if you spend the entire 90 minutes in child’s pose. What matters is showing up for yourself.

What if we actually put ourselves first? Does the thought make you uncomfortable? Does it feel selfish? Go ahead and be selfish. I dare you!

Feel the mental clarity and focus that comes with eating foods that nourish your body.

Feel the increased energy that comes from breaking a sweat and moving your body.

Feel your ability to handle over-stressed bosses, traffic jams and cranky kids with patience and calm.

All you need to do is show up. Show up for yourself everyday. I dare you.
